My Story
I was born with a VSD Ventricular Septal Defect in my heart, a leaky valve, When I was 10 I went to KillennBeck hospital in Leeds U.K, to have open heart surgery where the amazing surgeon Duncan Walker operated on me to patch my leaky valve up. I stayed in hospital for 3 weeks and was told that as an adult I would require further surgery.
Fast forward 30yrs and 3 days after my 40th birthday I received a call from my Hospital L.G.I in Leeds that it was time for my next operation. This operation is going to be to replace my Aortic Valve and Aortic Root. I discovered this problem back in 2013 after a routine apt at my local Hospital Calderdale Royal in Halifax. I was referred to the cardiology specialist at Leeds who took over my case. It was found that my Aorta was large and they kept an eye on it for the next 5yrs.
I had numerous procedures in that time a few being Cardioversions which were to put my heart back into normal rytham as it had gone out of rytham and become irregular which is known as A.F Anti Fibrilation. In November 2015 I had keyhole surgery to try to patch up my hole that had appeard again, sadly they couldnt patch it due to the size of the hole. While they were trying to patch up the hole they did an angiagram and I later found out when I spoke to the surgeons that the next operation would be the open heart surgery to replace my valve.
While all this had been going on I started on beta blockers and blood thinners to control the heart.
Last August 2017 my Cardiologist and I discussed the type of valve that we were going to use to replace my bad aorta. We settled on human valve but after the phone call 2half weeks ago It may be changed to Mechanical which I am not happy about as I have read lots on the Mechanical valves plus and minus points. I am hoping when i go to visit the cardiologist on the 23rd of Feb that I will be able to have the human valve repalcement, If I have to have a Mechanical valve then I would like to have the St,Judes one as I have read that this is a quiter valve :)
I have to have an angiagram in about 5 weeks or so to see the condition of my arteries but as I suspect they will be just fine.
Alot of emotions and feelings have been brought up the past few weeks, I am lucky that I will be able to see and ring my Cardiologist Psychologist for help advice and reassurance. I am looking forward to speaking to her and also have somoene who understands what im going through and feeling to speak to.
I will keep you updated on stuff. For now thank you for reading my first blog post.
